Black Maws are recurring enemies, first introduced in Meat Boy.
History[]
Meat Boy[]
Black Maws debut in Meat Boy, also appearing in its map pack expansion. They appear from black portals that are functionally identical to missile launchers; they spawn Black Maws that follow Meat Boy, and leave a bloody explosion on contact with him or a surface.
Super Meat Boy[]
Black Maws reappear in Super Meat Boy, once again spawning from black portals. They first appear in 4-15 Abaddon. They now function slightly differently from missile launchers: On contact with a surface, the Black Maw will explode as usual, but into ten "offsprings." Black Maws no longer explode on contact with Meat Boy, and their explosions are black.
Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine[]
Black Maws make a cameo in Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine. They are animated cardboard cutouts on a track.

Trivia[]
- The smaller heads resulting from a Black Maw's explosion look like Lagoliers, globular multi-jawed monsters from Stephen King's The Langoliers.
- When using Tim, it's possible to survive all of the Black Maws attacks when in a "reverse time" state. However, you will die if they encircle you and go into a "reverse time" state.
- The large head has a rare glitch where it will not kill Meat Boy on contact, the ten smaller heads however will always kill Meat Boy.
- Black Maws reappear In The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth as an enemy.
- There are two Black Maw objects in the editor. The one that doesn't disappear will crash the game when it shoots.
