Meat Boy is an Adobe Flash game developed by Edmund McMillen and Jonathan McEntee of "Team Mic." It was initially released on Newgrounds on October 5, 2008. It is the first Meat Boy game ever created, but is not officially part of the Super Meat Boy series, being labeled as a "prototype" by the developers.

The game is a precision platformer starring Meat Boy, a skinned human trying to have his girlfriend from an evil fetus in a jar. The game would be known for its vertical plaftorming and high difficulty.

A standalone expansion, the map pack, was released on Newgrounds on December 8, 2008. Meat Boy would be succeeded by Super Meat Boy in 2010, which marks the official start of the series.

Plot[]

Meat Boy and his girlfriend Bandaid Girl are enjoying their day in The Forest... until Dr. Fetus appears out of thin air and steals Bandaid Girl. Meat Boy pursues the kidnapper, the chase taking him through the Forest, the Salt Factory, and even the depths of Hell.

In the ending, Meat Boy corners Dr. Fetus, who punches Bandaid Girl away, gives Meat Boy the finger, and releases "chocolate" from his butt in front of him. These insults cause Bandaid Girl to fight back, giving Dr. Fetus a severe beating as Meat Boy cheers and dances. The beating ends with Bandaid Girl destroying Dr. Fetus' jar and suit and squishing him into a bloody pulp. The two lovers embrace and Meat Boy winks at the player, ending the game.

Gameplay[]

Meat Boy contains an early rendition of how Super Meat Boy would play. Meat Boy runs fast and can jump. He will slide up walls and can jump off of them onto platforms, other walls, or even the same wall. On contact with most obstacles, Meat Boy will immeditely die and respawn at the beginning of the level.

The player will unlock levels in sets of five, with three completed levels required to unlock a set. Bandaids can be found in some levels, too, with 24 total. These are used to unlock characters and a secret ending.

The game has a vertical aspect ratio, and all levels involve primarily vertical platforming.

Legacy[]

Despite Adobe Flash being discontinued as of January 2021, there are a few alternate ways to play Meat Boy in the modern day.

  1. The Basement Collection: A 2012 collection of Edmund McMillen's old Flash games available on Steam. Both Meat Boy and its map pack expansion are included.
  2. Flashpoint: An archival application containing thousands of Flash programs. Both Meat Boy and its map pack expansion are included as pre-installed "legacy games".
  3. Ruffle: A Flash emulator that lets you play Both Meat Boy and its map pack expansion on any websites that still include said games, albiet with a few imperfections.

Trivia[]

Compared to Super Meat Boy[]

  • There are no bandages. There are bandaids instead, which look identical to bandages.
  • There is only one animation of Dr. Fetus kidnapping bandaid (bandage) girl when completing a level, showing Dr. Fetus appearing, taking bandaid girl and flying away. It is not in the super version.
  • Meat boy's skeleton falls out when dying (along with meat boy exploding). In the super version, meat boy only explodes, without his skeleton falling out

General[]

  • If the game window is stretched out longer than it should be while in the intro, you can see meat boy become stuck infinitely running into a tree in the menu.
  • According to the description of the game on Newgrounds, this is a prototype of Super Meat Boy.
